I served as the director of the Andean program for Cornell International Institute for Food, Agriculture and Development from 1990 until 2002. I also served as director of the Latin American Program at Cornell from 1987 to 1993 and again in 2001-2002.

I have received awards and grants, fellowships and grants from: Woodrow Wilson, Fulbright, Mac Arthur, NEH, and A Ford Training Grant for Interdisciplinary Training of Graduate Students. The most recent grants include an Institute for the Social Sciences grant (2006) and two Faculty Innovation in Teaching grants from the office of the Provost (2005, 2007) and a grant from Olin library to create digital web site (2005)
